‘To build thriving new communities’
The three locations chosen for the Cambridge Challenge
will provide new communities
of up to 16,000 new homes by 2021. The partners have an ambitious vision
for the
future; with three clear objectives:
For Cambridgeshire Partnerships, success won’t simply be judged by the quality of our housing. Instead, success will be measured by creating communities where people want to live and choose to stay.
Homes will be flexible and adaptable for future needs. Standards for energy efficiency will exceed current levels. We will explore and draw from exemplars in the development of homes, the delivery of services and ways of supporting and empowering residents.
Within each planned new community the aims are more specific:
Southern Fringe
To the South-East of Trumpington and adjoining Addenbrookes Hospital lies the Southern Fringe.
Here the vision is for a modern, vibrant and distinctive urban extension of Trumpington to both complement and enhance the character of the city.
Northstowe
To the North-West of the city and North of the village of Oakington lies the area of Northstowe.
Here the vision is a new town for the 21st century that will be built to high standards of design and environmental quality. The town centre will contain a lively mix of shops, restaurants, offices and civic uses, and the neighbourhoods will be well supported by local schools and community facilities.
North-West Cambridge (NIAB)
On the North-Western edge of Cambridge City between Huntingdon Road and Histon Road lies the NIAB site.
Here the vision is to establish a distinctive new urban neighbourhood for the city, employing the highest standards of quality and principles of sustainability.
